The History of the 1919 Legacy Society

Located in historic Gettysburg, Pa., WellSpan Gettysburg Hospital has served Adams County and northern Maryland for over 100 years. The 1919 Legacy Society honors John and Annie Warner. In 1919, the Warners donated six acres of pastureland and $25,000 to build a hospital after the Spanish flu killed over 250 people in Adams County.

John, a local teacher, banker, merchant and fire chief, and his wife Annie were deeply committed to their community. They inspired others to join their charitable efforts, and the hospital admitted its first patient in 1921. Today, WellSpan Gettysburg Hospital continues to provide high-quality care and uphold the Warners’ tradition of philanthropy and community support.
