Through planned giving, our generous donors have helped shape the future of WellSpan Gettysburg Hospital and the communities we serve. These are their stories.

Betty Fair

Betty Fair

Philanthropy and volunteering have been central to Betty Fair’s life. In addition to spending the final nine years of her career as a patient financial counselor for WellSpan Gettysburg Hospital, she worked with the United Way campaign and the hospital’s employee giving campaign. In these roles, she saw how the Foundation helped patients and families directly.

“It’s about connecting people to the resources they need, and I wanted to be a part of that. I truly believe that anyone can give, and no gift is too small,” she says.

Her desire to help others and give back inspired her to make a planned gift benefiting WellSpan Gettysburg Hospital.

“You don’t have to be rich to give,” says Betty, but she found a way to honor the relationship she feels with the hospital: she designated a portion of her life insurance to the Foundation. “I want that relationship to continue even after I’m gone,” she says.

A life insurance policy, IRA or other retirement plan are easy yet impactful ways to leave a legacy of care.

“I think it is very important to support institutions in our community,” says Jean LeGros. “I have included several local charities in my will, and it is a pleasure to have the Gettysburg Hospital Foundation among them.”

While serving on the Gettysburg Hospital Foundation Board of Directors, Jean witnessed WellSpan Health’s impact on community health and wellness. She also knows firsthand why strong community support is critical to having excellent healthcare.

As a patient of WellSpan Gettysburg Hospital over the years, she experienced exceptional care and compassion. In honor of the care she received and in gratitude for the talented, dedicated healthcare professionals at Gettysburg, Jean has included the hospital in her will and frequently makes annual gifts to the Gettysburg Hospital Foundation. Her annual gifts help fund current programs, and her estate gifts will help meet future needs — a combined approach to creating a legacy of care.

Steve and Linda Renner

Born and raised in Adams County, Steve and Linda Renner understand the importance of supporting community institutions that make Adams County a vibrant place to live. Steve, former WellSpan Gettysburg Hospital President, and Linda, a retired Littlestown third-grade teacher, have seen firsthand how WellSpan Gettysburg Hospital and the community have grown.

Steve especially remembers the day Gettysburg Hospital and York Hospital merged and eventually became what is known as WellSpan Health, because he was a key leader in making that exciting announcement. Steve loves being a part of something greater than himself and for him:

“It always meant keeping the patients and community members at the forefront of my mind.”

Additionally, Steve and Linda both believe in the importance of keeping care local.

“I like having my family physician and specialty doctors available in the community,” says Linda.

“The local heritage and history of this community, especially at WellSpan Gettysburg Hospital, is important to us,” says Steve. “We want to see healthcare in this community continue to thrive and grow to meet the needs of future generations.”

That’s why Steve and Linda have planned for their donor-advised fund to eventually fund an endowment. This ensures their giving to the hospital and other beloved charities will continue in perpetuity.

Steve and Linda’s generous leadership and giving have created a legacy that will endure to help Adams County residents for generations to come.
